人体在防御和清除入侵病原体等异物时，有使免疫细胞定向趋化的功能，而引起这种功能的分子，称之为趋化因子。趋化因子是一小分子细胞因子家族蛋白，历史上包括SIS细胞因子家族、 SIG细胞因子家族, SYC细胞因子家族和血小板因子-4家族。
趋化因子蛋白的共同结构特征包括，分子量小(约8-10 kDa)，有四个位置保守的半胱氨酸残基以保证其三级结构。一部分趋化因子被认为是促炎性细胞因子，可以在免疫应答过程中诱导免疫系统的细胞进入感染部位。而有些趋化因子被认为维持机体自我调节，在正常的组织维持或发育过程中控制细胞的迁徙。
